36ONE-SONGO-SPECIALIZED Press Release
songo.info announces partnership with 36ONE Asset Management
Stellenbosch, Western Cape (25 March 2011) – This week songo.info celebrates the beginning of a three-year partnership deal with 36ONE Asset Management. The prestigious South African asset management company has come onboard as headline sponsor for the songo.info sport and education trust until at least 31 December 2013.
This exciting relationship will begin in earnest with the 2011 Absa Cape Epic, taking place from 27 March – 3 April. The Absa Cape Epic is the world’s premier mountain bike stage race and a fitting stage to make known 36ONE Asset Management’s support of the songo.info charity.
Swiss World Champion mountain biker, Christoph Sauser, will again partner with his Specialized teammate, South African Champion, Burry Stander, in this year’s race. Together the pair of highly decorated athletes – riding appropriately-named Specialized Epic 29ers for the first time in the Cape Epic – intend to dominate the event in the new colours of Team 36ONE-SONGO-SPECIALIZED.
Through its First Gear initiative, Specialized has been supporting songo.info with bikes and technical support since its inception. First Gear was born out of a fundamental need to get kids riding bikes. Set a kid riding and you set them on a winning course for life: You provide fun opportunities for children to play away from the perils of township streets; you give them a chance to progress and even excel in a sport; and you develop healthy habits that last a lifetime. First Gear was created to do just that – for as many kids as possible.
“We are very excited about partnering with 36ONE Asset Management to grow the brand in a niche market. We are joining forces with a top-performing asset management company to create a strong team, capable of delivering results. 36ONE Asset Management’s support will enable the sustainable growth of the songo.info organisation. We intend to deliver on our promises for all our benefactors at the 2011 Absa Cape Epic,” said Sauser.
songo.info is a sports development programme based in Kayamandi on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. It is run by local community leader and avid sportsman, Songo Fipaza. songo.info provides cycling opportunities, including BMX, mountain biking and road riding, to the children of the township. The programme aims to provide children with a safe place to grow and develop, while also having fun. “We aim to give children the best possible start in life,” said Fipaza.
The songo.info program was pioneered by Sauser in 2008. A chance meeting with Fipaza introduced Sauser to the selfless work being done for the kids of Kayamandi. The two teamed up and created the songo.info charity. Sauser recruited Stander to ride the Absa Cape Epic, and together they raised sufficient funds to help Fipaza realise his dream of developing a BMX track to serve the community of Kayamandi. Today this initiative has flourished into a fully fledged BMX and mountain biking program with over 150 children involved in riding. The kids have developed their skills under the watchful eye of Fipaza and have gone on to participate in a wide array of events from local mountain biking races to prestige events such as the Absa Cape Epic, the Grape Escape and the Wines2Whales stage races.
