Cape Argus Cycle Tour Cape Town, RSA

Date: 11.03.2012

Description: Biggest timed road race in the world!

110km, 2.35hrs
6th place in sprint finish for first

I was really looking forward to the Argus like every year! The coolest road race I can think of my roadie carrier. Already to ride through the city in the darkness towards the start is special. The clubs and bars are still open. Party people still party, riders start riding….

The first 15min of the race is darkness! The balance and speed feeling is different in those conditions. It feels quite weird to cycle out on the national freeway towards the see.
Even after all the mtb racing the previous weekend I trained hard during the week, so I did not feel so fresh from the start on, but after mid way my legs almost turned for free. Although not for the last two climbs any more. On Chapmans I was a bit day dreaming when Darren Lill attacked. I tried to bridge the breakaway but got stuck with the same tempo 20 meter behind them. Luckily 3 strong riders joined me over the top and in the downhill we closed it. Over Suikerbossie the last climb we rode steady fast, and after Camps Bay nothing was organized any more in our breakaway! One attack after the other… it felt like we sprinted 20 times for the finish line! The last one for the real finish did not feel any special any more. I crossed it in 6th place which was very surprising for me.

After the race we rode our bikes to the beach for our traditional Camps Bay breakfast.
