Description: Mountain Bike Stage Race

Appends to race/event: 17.10.2011 – 22.10.2011 // Cape Pioneer Trek, RSA

6 days/stages, 660km, 13’500m of climbing, 29.24hrs of racing,
4 stage wins, 5th overall, lots of minutes or hours behind winner 360life…

I partnered up with South African Max Knox for this years Cape Pioneer. A strong and very fun partner, all I needed for extending my racing holidays.
Also two kids took part. Siuvyile and Bongani two already experienced stage racers had a solid ride. For once I was looking after riders, but I promise township kids are very low maintainance, not like we world cup racers…

Our race is quickly written down: On day one I took a short cut, there I lost Max, he was waiting for me on the route and I was waiting for him at the last water point… finally I had to ride back in the hope he was not too far away! We lost so much time right there, plus we also got a 1h time penalty for leaving the route. Anyway after that we won all the other stages, except the one day where we rode through a „bed“ of thorns and we ended up pumping our tires for half of the race. We ended up finishing the race with 3 different pumps. The last one we borrowed was my favorite!

Anyway next to racing I came here to have fun, and so we did!
The organizer Dryland, Bigshot Media, Paul the commentator and all other staff plus riders are making this race so enjoyable. The finisher party at Lemon & Lime is becoming a legend, and what happens there should stay there…

I am writing this in a nice coffee shop in Cape Town with sea view. Tomorrow I am flying up to Johannesburg for almost a week. The days are going to be busy with, live on Supercycling, Cape-Epic route launch, 36ONE Asset Management breakfast interviews, charity ride with brunch, Charity evening with auction. So far to my after season holidays…
