Description: XCO Qualification Race for Olympics
One start plus 5 laps, 1.35hrs racing time
19th place, 4.28min off winner Julien Absalon
I am always very positive leading towards a race, although I knew finishing the Cape-Epic only two weeks before was not ideal for my second Cross Country race of the season. I had to rest and I was sprint training ready only after more then a week.
I drove up to Belgium on Wednesday afternoon. It was mental training with lot of traffic jam around Strassbourg, so as the new race course which was all over a small but steep hill. It was not easy to find the orientation. It was like a “basket of snakes” Wonder how the spectators still had a idea from where we are coming and where we are going?! Oh well the great Belgium spectators are cyclo cross proof… The old format course was so characteristic, especially the finish in the middle of town. This year the spectators could hardly get to the finish straight, because on one side of the road were cliffs and on the other side only half of the pedestrian zone was accessable.
No news about my start. Did not go well off the line, then rode from 45th to 20th place and finally I got more and less stuck on that position for half of the race. Normally I always ride so well towards the end of a race, but this time I only felt pain. It actually felt like my legs have not been attached to my body. Hopefully this was the result of the super cold temperatures plus the strong wind, which added chill factor to it as well.
Luckily I moved from 15th to 13th overall, so still second start row in Nove Mesto in one moth. But more importantly I have two more Cross Country races in between plus I can work on my start in training!
